Mandated Health Screenings

Keeping your child healthy is essential to their educational success.  The Pennsylvania Public School Code requires specific health screenings, based on grade level, to all students in Pennsylvania. These are considered screenings and are not to be a substitute for regular checkups with a pediatrician. School nurses perform the following health screenings:

  • Height and Weight Screenings → K-12

  • Vision Screenings → K-12

  • Hearing Screenings → Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 11th grade

  • Physical Examinations → Kindergarten or upon enrollment, 6th and 11th grade

  • Scoliosis Screening → 6th and 7th grade

  • Dental Examinations → Kindergarten or upon enrollment, 3rd and 7th grade

Parents and guardians have the opportunity to exempt their child from height and weight measurements upon written request, submitted directly to the School Nurse of the respective building. The form must be dated and signed by a parent/guardian and indicate that their child should be exempt for height and weight measurements for that school year. This request must be resubmitted to the School Nurse every year, and should be sent to the nurse by the end of the first week of school. Please reach out to your school nurse for any questions or concerns!
