Identification Process

Step 1:
Who: Family
What: Enrollment, Data Entry

  • Family completes Online Registration

Step 2:
Who: ESL Teacher
What: Initial Testing/ Identification

  • ESL Teacher reviews Home Language Survey
  • ESL Teacher conducts a Family Interview
  • ESL Teacher reviews the student’s academic records (if available)
  • ESL Teacher administers WIDA Screener (if applicable)
  • WIDA Screener for grades K-12
  • Parent Letter - Initial Placement
  • Parent Letter - Continuation of Services
  • Parent Letter - Not Qualifying

Identification Flowchart

Once an English learner (EL) has been identified and placed in an ELD program, a parent or guardian has the right to refuse English language services. Click here for more information on how to opt-out. A parent can also return their student back into the ESL program at any point. Please communicate with your child's ESL teacher if you wish to have your child opted in or opted out of the ESL program.
