Amnesty International of W.H.S. is dedicated to the effort of freeing "prisoners of conscience" in other countries throughout the world, particularly in the Caribbean. There prisoners are people who have been detained for their beliefs or because of their ethnic origins, sex, color, or language who have not used or advocated violence. Additionally, Amnesty International seeks to ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners, abolish the death penalty, and end extra-judicial executions and "dissapearences". Amnesty International of W.H.S. uses the power of the letter in sending requests on the behalf of prisoners to foreign heads of state. Often, after recieving hundreds (or thousands) of letters, goverments may decide to free the people who are jailed without just cause. The W.H.S. chapter meets monthly in the counseling office and interested students are invited to join on an ongoing basis.
